According to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, light is the fastest thing in the universe. And while darkness only exists in the absence of light, light is not dependent on the absence of anything.
As light appears, darkness disappears from its path. And the speed in which light moves through its path is greater than the speed of any other entity in the universe.
This is a mercy and a sign from God, and one we should deeply reflect upon.
Think about this: God designed light to spread faster than darkness. He made light easier to experience and to receive. And He made darkness exist ONLY when there is no light.
We all know the power of light. Light is truth. Light is what guides our sight. It is what allows us to see clearly. It is what inspires. It is what gives us hope when we are in darkness.
And light, as we are taught in the Qur'an, is not just physical. We are taught about spiritual light, and the importance and power of that light.
Just like physical light guides the sight of our eyes, spiritual light guides the sight of our heart. It is what allows the heart to see truth. It is what inspires the heart. It is what fills the heart with hope. It is what liberates the heart from falsehood and illusion. It is what obliterates darkness from the heart. And once the heart receives that light, darkness cannot exist in its presence.
"Noor," the Arabic term for light in the Qur'an is used to signify enlightenment, liberation, truth, guidance, and a freedom from darkness.
God Himself has said in the Qur'an that He is "Noorul samawati wal ard," the LIGHT of the Heavens and the Earth.
This is not to say that God is the same as the light our human intellect understands, for the light we know of is a created thing and God is above and nothing like anything He creates, but He is the Creator all light, physical and spiritual.
But to access that light, belief in Him must fill our hearts, for God tells us in the Qur'an (2:257): "God is the ally of those who believe: He brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light."
If we can learn to always hold onto His rope, light will fill our path and obliterate any darkness in its way.
And just like light in itself is the fastest moving thing that we know exists in the universe, there will be noone or nothing that will move faster towards you than God Himself, than the Creator of light, for He says in Hadith Qudsi, "If he (my servant) comes to me walking, I go to Him at speed."
God is so merciful and wants goodness for His creation, whom He created with love. He has made it so easy to experience and receive His light. He has made it easy to receive His guidance and for our path to be lit by His truths.
But the question is, what will you do today to open your heart to God's light?
Take a moment and start reflecting upon how you can open your hearts to God's light during this day! Take some time to think about the blessing of having this day and the very breath that just filled your lungs! You are alive, because He loves you and sees potential in you! He is giving you another opportunity to experience His light and live in that light! Take a moment to reflect on how you can put in the effort to sincerely direct your heart to Him and to walk towards Him regardless of the condition of your heart, mood, or life situation.
By taking this step to reflect and move closer to God, know this: God will never leave you to yourself. He will never dismiss your efforts. He will always come closer to you by a far greater distance than you came to Him. You will witness just how appreciative He is of your efforts, for He is Ash-Shakoor (The Most Appreciative), and you will most certainly witness the power of His light, guidance, and liberation every step of the way!
May God fill our hearts with His light and not leave our hearts to experience its absence. ❤
“Reflection is the lamp of the heart. If it departs, the heart will have no light.”
― Imam Al-Haddad (rA)
