Isn't It Time To Be The Person God Wants You To Be?
Written by Dr. Marwa Assar, PsyD
Isn't it time to finally step into the person that God created and wants you to be?
Isn't it time to take a deeper look into yourself and assess the layers weighing you down, and the barriers between you and your Creator?
Isn't it time to unlearn all that doesn't serve your soul, its peace, and its path to God?
Isn’t it time to seek your wholeness through God and not through what the world tells you to chase after, in order to feel complete?
Isn't it time to finally live by what you claim to believe?
This question of "isn't it time?" is a question I learned to ask myself and others, from reading one of my favorite chapters of the Qur'an, Surat Al Hadid, Chapter 57.
In a beautiful verse in the Qur'an (57:16), God asks us this very question of "Isn't it time?"
"Isn't it time (or has the time not come) for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah (God) and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient."
Ya Allah, how overwhelmingly beautiful and heart moving this verse is!
In such a powerful yet gentle way, God is asking us to assess when we will finally submit to Him, to what we have believed, to what we have testified is true, to what He commanded us to do, to what we say with our tongues matter to us?
This question calls our hearts to assess how we have been spending our time so far and WHEN we will finally align our words with our actions. By reading "isn't it time?", one has to look at the present and no further! For "isn't it time" is directing us to the fact that the time is NOW!
It is calling us to ask ourselves about WHEN we plan on submitting to the TRUTH we have been distancing ourselves from, if not now!
This verse is also providing us an example of those who let a long period of time pass without submitting their hearts to God, and as a result, their hearts then hardened!
But do you know what God then says after He asks us this powerful question?
In the following verse (57:17), God says:
"Know that Allah (God) gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand."
The beauty and wisdom of us reading this verse immediately after the one in which He asks us "isn't it time?", is truly reflective of God’s mercy and love for us!
Let us reflect for a moment upon the wisdom behind this verse following God's question to us of "isn't it time?"
Why would God tell us that He revives a dead earth after He asks us about WHEN we will start submitting to Him?
What comes up for me as I reflect on this is this:
God, in His infinite knowledge, and great mercy and love for us, wants us to feel HOPE immediately after He calls upon us to turn our hearts around and fully submit to Him.
Because God, being our Creator, knows our psychology, our design, the power of Shaytan, and how easily one may feel discouraged after they think of how far away they have been from God.
The shame that comes up after answering such a question can make a person feel hopeless, and Shaytan will influence this greatly!
But God always wants us to feel hope while Shaytan always wants us to lack hope, feel discouraged, and stay right where we are until our life passes us by and we no longer have the TIME to make any changes.
God tells us in the Qur’an (2:268):
"Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing."
God wants us to hope in what He holds for us, and He is always ready to embrace us with His love and mercy. This is reflective in the verse mentioned earlier that follows the verse in which He asks us “Isn’t it time?”.
He immediately reminds us of His power to revive a lifeless earth so we know that no matter how far or lifeless our hearts may feel, that He has the power to bring life to our inner being!
Because, like the earth, our hearts too, can be lifeless. We can walk around existing, but not really feeling alive. Our hearts can feel barren, empty, and lacking nourishment, just as the earth can experience the same as it goes through its seasons.
But we have seasons too. Just as the earth has its seasons in which it is lifeless, don’t we also have seasons in our life in which our hearts feel empty as well?
The hope though is that we do not meet God while we are experiencing those lifeless seasons. Therefore, we should always be striving to bring our hearts back to Him so that we meet Him with a heart that is awakened by His remembrance, and a heart that is alive, sound, and whole.
And if you find yourself going through such a lifeless season and feeling like you are too far away to come close to Him, know this: If God has the power to revive such a lifeless, great, and vast earth right before our eyes, does He not have the power to revive your heart that is contained within your being?
No matter how far away you feel, know that He is the Owner of that heart within you, that longs to feel alive, that longs to be nourished, that longs to experience the sweetness of faith that comes from God drawing you near to Him.
So after you ask yourself “Isn’t it time?”, do not lose hope!
He has the power to renew the soil of your heart!
He has the power to make your heart bear the fruits of recommitting yourself to Him and to what your soul has testified to!
He has the power to detach that heart within you from ALL that has been making it feel lifeless, empty, not enough, not sufficed, not WHOLE, and not nourished!
The Creator of the earth is also the Creator of your heart!
For He is the Lord of All the Worlds, RAB AL A3LAMEEN, the Lord of the world outside of you, but also the Lord of the world within YOU!
And no one else has the power to align that world within you like the One who created it!
So my dear, I ask you this: isn’t it time to turn to the One who never left you? Isn’t it time to recommit yourself to Him and submit yourself to His Truth? Isn’t it time to lean into the person He wants you to be, the person He created you to be? Isn’t it time to stop wasting time? Isn’t it time to stop fixating on what you think you need to be happy and submit to what He has designed for your soul to be at peace?
Isn’t it time to finally take the steps to doing the inner work that will matter, to seeking the knowledge that will transform the heart you carry each and every day? Isn’t it time to finally commit to the intentions and goals you keep setting and longing for?
Answer God's question with your whole heart, and say “It is time!”
There is no better time than the present. There is no better time than today. Do not let this day pass without taking a sincere step towards the One who created you, raised you, fashioned you, and loves you more than anyone else in this world!
It is definitely time!
