Losing Yourself? Start Walking Towards Truth!

Written by Dr. Marwa Assar, PsyD

Have you went through a struggle that left you feeling like you don't know who you are?

Like you feel confused about who the person in the mirror is and who you should be?

And has that confusion left you feeling overwhelmed, scattered, and not grounded?

As a result of this, maybe you feel disconnected from yourself, God, and your life as a whole?

Does this sound familiar?

If it does, I really want to speak to your heart and this confusion you feel within you!

First and foremost, I want your heart to know that it is okay to not know who you are right now, or to not feel like you know the truth of your heart, direction, and path in life!

Struggles are hard, and when we go through them, they can shake our lives, and sometimes our perception of ourselves, God, others, and our path in life.

That is the nature of struggles. They shake up our reality, our comfort, our routines, and our lifestyles. And as hard as that is to experience, there is also tremendous beauty in this, in going through the tests that God custom-tailors for each us, on our path back to Him.

You see, God knows YOU, even when you don't know YOU!

And the test you went through, or are going through, is rooted in God's knowledge of who YOU are. So as much as you may think that the test has confused you and distanced you from who you are, the test is actually there to bring you closer to the truth of who you are!

You see, without tests and struggles, we would be comfortable in the false layers we carry.

We wouldn't have any reason to question the truth of who we are, what we believe in, what our values are, our purpose, or even what we TRULY want in our life!

Tests and struggles are the means to showing you TRUTH. God teaches us about this reality of tests in the Qur'an, as He says:

"Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are TRUTHFUL and He will surely make evident those who are false.’

(Qur'an, Surah 29: 2-3)

Here, God is teaching us that tests serve to reveal to us the TRUTH!

Why? Doesn't God already know the truth?

Ofcourse He does! The test is there to show US the truth, NOT God!

Because living in falsehood is so harmful to us, our souls, and our path.

Living in falsehood imprisons us, while truth sets us free!

Tests come to show us the truth of our own faith, the truth of what we speak and claim to believe, but also the truth of everything else: who we are, our values, our path to God, and what He has promised!

Being connected to TRUTH is the ultimate priority in Islam, for everything God teaches us is to connect us to the truth, so we do not spend our lives enveloped in what isn't real, and so we are living in truth before we arrive at the truth of the destination that awaits us!

The question is though, how do we arrive at this truth? How do we arrive at the truth of who we are, the truth of our tests, and the truth of what God is teaching us?

We start by walking towards truth!

Begin your journey towards truth by directing your heart, your confusion, and your entire struggle to the ONE who has named Himself, THE TRUTH, Al-Haqq.

Your Creator is the Source of all the truth you seek: about yourself, your path, about your test, and about God Himself.

By taking your test to Him, you begin the journey of letting God help you arrive at the truth He wants you to witness, so that you can begin letting go of all that isn't true!

Don't we usually hear people say, that it was through their tests that they learned who their TRUE friends are? That it is through their toughest times that they learned what no longer was in service of their growth?

That is because tests have this powerful way of clearing our vision and are the means in which we unburden ourselves from that which isn't in service of our growth, and us living truthfully!

So if you feel like you don't know who you are right now, that is okay!

It means that God is designing a process for you to figure out the TRUTH of who you are, who He is, and what is in service of your growth!

So I encourage you to take a moment today to turn to God and ask Him to show you the truth of who you are, the truth in the struggle you are going through, and the truth He wants you to receive through your test!

And to get you started, here is a great dua (supplication) that you can say right now to help you turn your heart to God and prioritize your journey to truth:

اللَّهُمَّ أَرِنِي الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَوَفِّقْنِي لِاتِّبَاعِهِ وَأَرِنِي الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلًا وَوَفِّقْنِي لِاجْتِنَابِهِ

“O Allah, show me the truth as truth and guide me to follow it. Show me the false as false and guide me to avoid it."

But do not stop there! Finding the truth about ourselves and our path requires that we begin to do the inner work that helps us tackle the barriers between us and truth!

And this is precisely what I help students do in my God & Me Psycho-Spiritual Transformation Program, a program designed to provide students the Islamic, spiritual, but also the psychological knowledge and tools that can help them thrive spiritually, mentally, and emotionally!

Infact, I have a whole module and phase of transformation dedicated to TRUTH and taking students through a process that includes both knowledge and practice, to help them begin unlearning what isn't true and arriving at what is!

Through an Islamic psychological lens, I guide students in The God & Me Program through a heart-centered, spiritual, and psychological journey that ✔renews their mindset, ✔redirects their hearts to the truth of who they are, and the truth of who God is, ✔changes the way they view their tests and struggles, and ✔provides them the knowledge and tools that will help them thrive spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, and allow them to experience TRUE Inner Transformation!

Because I believe that the journey to truth requires that we seek the right holistic knowledge and tools, as well as have the right support along the way, to help us become the best version of who we are!

Because isn't finding ourselves and living truthfully worth our efforts? More importantly, isn't aligning ourselves with God's truth worth our time, intentions, and investment?

Ofcourse it is!

There is nothing MORE VALUABLE than doing the inner work that will allow us to know ourselves, know our Creator, arrive at our truths, and begin living in a way that is aligned with God!

This is the work that leads to your spiritual, mental, and emotional transformation!

And this is what my God & Me Psycho-Spiritual Transformation Program is all about!

So if this is what you TRULY want and you are ready to begin your journey towards TRUTH, I encourage you to click below to learn more and sign up to The God & Me Program!

But regardless of what you decide, make sure you never stop walking towards truth! There is nothing else that will be more powerful in your life at helping you find yourself, God, and your path again!

"The God & Me program changed my life! It taught me things I never was taught before. Nobody ever taught me before how to have a relationship with God and a relationship with myself at the same time. As I was going through the program, I kept thinking, “Why didn’t I hear this before? Why didn’t I read this anywhere before? I have been to so many classes and programs, but the concepts I learned in The God & Me program were nothing like I have learned before! By just going through the program, it reduced my anxiety a lot. One of the most powerful things that helped me was hearing Dr. Marwa say, “you are not supposed to carry everything by yourself.” That idea for me was so powerful, that Allah (God) did not ask me to carry so many of the things I was carrying by myself. He is there and I can always count on Him. Since starting the program, I have better self-control, my external circumstances do not let me spiral down as fast, I slowed down, I am more present with God and with myself, I was able to reduce the dosage of my anxiety medication from 40 mg to 5 mg! But most importantly, my relationship with God improved significantly!"
